Simple Roguelike (Yes, very original, I know) is a small 2D pixel-art roguelike (No kidding?) game that I created solo using only free assets (sprites, tilesets, musics, sound effects, icons, etc.). The player controls a small, sword-wielding character trapped in a large dungeon room, facing increasingly powerful waves of monsters emerging from magical portals.

The game's core appeal lies in the upgrades offered to the player—whether upon leveling up or opening a chest—as well as the boss battles.

Upgrades will always be offered in sets of three.

The image explains something: for each improvement suggestion, there will be two icons in the center. The one on the left represents a skill or the player, while the one on the right represents the stat that will be increased/decreased.

Upgrades will focus on boosting character stats (65% chance):

  • Basic attack damage (1 base)
  • Critical hit chance (5% base)
  • Critical hit multiplier (125% base)
  • Attack speed (100% base)
  • Movement speed (70 base)
  • Max health (50 base)

Or boosting a skill's stats (32% chance):

  • Damage (1 base, except for the Sword of Judgment, which deals 2 base damage)
  • Critical hit chance (5% base)
  • Critical hit multiplier (125% base)
  • Effect radius (0.7 base)
  • Cast time (2s base)
  • Number of projectiles (1 base)

Or a new skill (3% chance)

There are 10 skills:

  • Fireball (Fire projectile that explodes on contact with an enemy)

  • Piercing Spear (Spear that pierces through enemies up to 3 times)

  • Tomahawk (Spinning axe thrown toward an enemy that returns to the player)

  • Finger of Zeus (Lightning strikes the target, dealing area-of-effect damage)

  • Ricochet Arrow (Arrow that can bounce off enemies up to 3 times)

  • Judge's Hammer (Hammer appears above an enemy and smashes down, dealing area-of-effect damage)

  • Sword of Judgment (Sword appears above an enemy and strikes down at them)

  • Laser (Long laser beam that passes through all enemies in its path)

  • Disintegration (Holy attack that deals area-of-effect damage)

  • Baguette (A little French touch xD; the baguette hits the target, then splits into 4 smaller baguettes that fly off in all directions—these do not... cannot be split)

Skills are abilities that execute automatically and target enemies within their range on their own.

Upgrades come in 4 rarity levels:

  • Common (58%)
  • Uncommon (30%)
  • Rare (10%)
  • Legendary (2%)

There are 3 different types of monsters:

  • Green Slime (Waves 1 to 9)

  • Orc (Waves 11 to 19)

  • Demon (Waves 21 to 29)

The game goes up to wave 30.

There are 3 different bosses:

  • The Necromancer (Wave 10) (Masters fire and can summon monsters)

  • To be revealed (Wave 20)
  • To be revealed (Wave 30)

Bosses all have 3 skills and a basic attack.

When a boss uses a skill, one or more red zones appear, allowing the player to visualize the skill's area of effect—either partially (showing the starting zones) or completely.

The basic attack—performed by pressing ENTER or SPACE—is a forward sword thrust; it has limited range, so be careful.

When the player takes damage, they can regain health using health potions dropped by monsters.

Quick tip: Save your health potions; you'll need them for the bosses, as they deal heavy damage if they hit you.

You can also pause the game by pressing ESC.

I’ve worked on several game projects before, but this is the first one where I’ve seen the initial idea through to completion.

I wanted to create a roguelike where the character's basic attack is just as important as their skills, and where the bosses offer a real challenge.

It remains a small game that can be finished in 45–60 minutes.

AI was used in this project for the menu background, the frames corresponding to the different upgrade rarities, and the ice fist sprite used by the final boss.

Just to reiterate, all the resources I used are free.

  • Sprites/Tilesets -> Itch/OpenGameArt
  • Sounds, Musics -> Freesound
  • Icons -> SVGRepo
  • Fonts -> Dafont
